Neal Harris is Associate Professor of Sociology and Politics at Oxford Brookes University, Oxford, UK. His research focuses on the obstacles to social and political transformation. He asks the question: why do we still live, work, and organise as we do, when it is patently destroying our planet and our own well-being? By developing insights from the first generation of the Frankfurt School, who adopted an interdisciplinary and critical approach to research this question, Neal has made noteworthy interventions in the fields of sociology, social theory, science and technology studies, political theory, organisational studies, and continental philosophy. Neal is the author/editor of seven books, including: Critical Theory & Social Pathology: the Frankfurt School Beyond Recognition (Manchester University Press, 2022), Capitalism and its Critics (Routledge, 2022, co-authored with Gerard Delanty), Foundations of Social Theory: A Critical Introduction (Routledge, 2024), and Critical Theory & the Critique of Alternative Societies: Co-Operatives, Mutual Aid, Universal Basic Income (Manchester University Press, 2022). Neal’s current and future projects increasingly focus on artificial intelligence, prefigurative theories of social transformation, and the continuing urgency for reflexively critical and interdisciplinary social research. He can be contacted via his email and is always open to discussing ideas, projects, and possible collaborations.
